Description

2014 - Photoshop with tablet and pen.

I've been reading the original 80's Mirage TMNT comics by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird and I love the art style. The TMNT Ultimate Collection's of the comics have really cool behind the scenes notes by Kevin and Peter for each comic and even page and panel  explanations. Reading those was just as interesting as watching a behind the scenes feature on a movie. They kept mentioning something called "Duo Shade Board" by a company called Graphix. I looked it up and it's a special kind of paper that comic artists would ink on and use two special chemicals to crosshatch shade. The result is a black and white comic image with the illusion of a gray-scale that's printable on a standard black print press. Apparently is was expensive, but an essential tool for comic artists at the time. Here's a vid about it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFNwhf…

You can't buy Duo Shade board anymore because Graphix discontinued the product after programs like Photoshop and new printing standards made it obsolete. I decided I needed to figure out a way to use Photoshop to emulate the style. I found a tutorial on the internet on making patterns in Photoshop and modified it for my purposes. This TMNT portrait serves as my first test of the technique. It's very close to what Duo Shade board looks like, but in the future I'm going to tweek it and make the hatching thinner and finer.

If anyone is interested I can make a tutorial on how to make your own Duo Shade custom brush for Photoshop. Leave a comment request and I'll get to work on it.

Cowabunga!

P.S. If you're wondering which Ninja Turtles this is, it could be any of them. The original comic was in black and white so you couldn't tell them apart by the color of their masks. You had to see t heir weapons to distinguish or go by the dialog and their personalities. Even on the color covers they all had red masks.
